NERC Renews Okpai Power Plant's Licence

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has granted the application for renewal of licence submitted by the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) Limited to operate its 480megawatts Okpai Power Plant for another 10 years.
Licence number NERC/LC/037 was first issued to Agip to operate its Okpai Power Plant November 29, 2007 and has since been contributing to the country’s generation capacity. In line with the terms and conditions for its licence, the multi-national oil and gas company had approached NERC for renewal of its power generation licence, which the Commission has approved.
The Commission at about the same time approved submitted applications for both on-grid and captive generation licences. These licences approved include the licence for an on-grid power plant by Oriental Renewable Solutions Limited to generate 50megawatts in Dutse, Jigawa State and EN Consulting and Projects Limited for a 50megawatts power plant at Birni Yero Road, Igabi, Kaduna State.
Also approved were 30 megawatts embedded power plant owned by Geogrid Lightec Limited within the premises of Cadbury Limited, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State; a 30megawatts on-grid power generation plants by Milhouse Generation Services Limited at Nsukka, Enugu State.
Three other licences for captive power generation plants by Greenville Oil and Gas Limited for 50 megawatts at Rumuji, Rivers State; Speciality Pulp and Paper Limited for 3.5megawatts and 6megwatts power plan by the Nigerian Breweries, Kudenda Industrial Area, Kaduna State were also approved by the Commission.
The Commission further approved the request of the Nigerian American Tobacco (BAT) to sell excess of 0.9megawatts from its captive generation power plant to Ibadan Electricity Distribution. The approval is expected to improve power supply within the catchment area of IBEDC.
Other business transactions that receive the Commission’s approval include the transfer of shareholding by Alausa Power Limited to Elecktron Engineering Limited and renewal of permit number NERC/CPG/006 for Royal Tropicana Hotels limited to operate for another 5 years.
Meanwhile, on-grid generation entails power generated and transmitted through the national grid to any of the electricity licensed electricity distribution companies for consumption across the country.
