Ag. Chairman/CEO NERC elected into Energy Regulators Regional Association (ERRA)

The acting Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Anthony Akah, mni, has been elected into the presidium of the Energy Regulatory Regional Association (ERRA) at the recently concluded General Assembly of the association that took place in Warsaw, Poland. The association is a group of regulators from Europe, Asia, Middle East and the United States.


Dr. Akah will be the first African to be elected into the Executive Committee of the association and will serve for a period of two years.

The association’s main objective is to increase exchange of information and experience among its members and to expand access to energy regulatory experience around the world.

The purpose of ERRA is to improve national energy regulation in member countries, to foster development of stable energy regulators with autonomy and authority and to improve cooperation among energy regulators. In addition, the association strives to increase communication and the exchange of information, research and experience among members and increase access to energy regulatory information and experience around the world and promote opportunities for training.

Other countries that were elected as presidium members along with Nigeria include Turkey, Latvia, Estonia, Oman, Romania and Hungary.

Nigerian membership of ERRA was also upgraded from associate status to full membership at the General Assembly.

Nigeria’s membership of ERRA has been beneficial in terms of exchange of experience with other regulatory agencies and trainings, internship and knowledge sharing among member states.

The body has on number of occasions conducted trainings and seminars within and outside the country for staff of the Commission in areas of managing emerging privatised electricity market, tariff setting, incentive regulation and benchmarking among others.

Countries that gained upgraded status along with Nigeria are Cameroon; Oman, Pakistan; Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.

The new status attained by Nigeria and the election of Akah as a member of the seven-man presidium is expected to attract more benefits to the country. The presidium of ERRA is elected for a two year term.
